When I log on, the php block that tells me who is online reflects the username/password that I just attempted to log in, but the board continues to assume I'm an anonymous user.
I can successfully log on when I run the admin log in, and then the board successfully recognizes me.
Everything else seems to be working fine. Running Windows 2000/Apache. Email not working was corrected by changing php.ini to reflect my smtp server. Install has been relatively bump free thanks to the help from these forums.

make sure you are going to the same address you entered in your config.php
so if the url in your config is http://www.joe.com
don't go to http://joe.com
read a few pages down on the front page and you should see this issue discuessed or search for cookie issues

User Block not updating after login

This is a very popular problem ... Usually, it's one of the following:
Make sure you have cookies enabled in your browser. Also in some version of IE, you need to lower your security settings before it works.
Make sure you use the exact URL that you specified in $_CONF['site_url'], i.e. if the URL there includes "www.", don't try to login using the URL without "www." (and vice versa).
