Here's a followup on my own post after discovering some answers...

Yes. You need the gallery/setup/.htaccess file from the gallery distribution. With that file present, configuration of url rewriting works fine.

> Can I control access to the gallery in the same way I do

Yes, but you need to do it through the gallery's permissions page rather than through the geeklog admin section.

> Can I use the gallery for user photos?

I haven't figured this one out yet.

> Can I embed thumbs from the gallery in stories?

I haven't figured this out out yet either.

Yes, such a block exists. I found GalleryRandomPhotoBlock on squatty.com. It requires a few manual fixes to get it working right with an embedded gallery.
