Well, I know that at least one of the "contenders" (iBlog) doesn't allow commenting at all, so I don't think they were using it as a defining element of what makes a 'blog.

They did reference it as a feature (which GL got credited for as (IIRC) the only package on the list that allows for Threaded comments; the others are all "flat", assuming they even supported comments).

You could always inquire of Macworld how they came up with the list they did...
