Welcome to Geeklog Wednesday, May 22 2013 @ 12:32 PM EDT
Just in time for the new year: The first release candidate for Geeklog 1.4.0 is now available for download.
Quite a few bugs have been fixed, some minor improvements have been made, and so this should provide a much smoother experience than the beta. But still: Remember that this is not the final version yet, so if in doubt, you may want to wait for the official release in the not-too-distant future.
In the meantime, please help us squash the remaining bugs by reporting them in the official 1.4.0rc1 bug thread in the forums. And you don't have to install 1.4.0rc1 to do that, since the demo site has also been updated.
Since this is one of the biggest updates in Geeklog's history, we made a last-minute decision to call it Geeklog 1.4.0 (instead of 1.3.12). After almost one year in development, this update brings you the following new features:
register_globals = off. Please note, however, that some plugins and add-ons may still require it to be on.$_CONF['advanced_editor'] = true; in your config.php.Due to the huge amount of changes in the code, we are releasing this beta version before we move on to release candidates (and the final release, eventually). Therefore, the usual warning: If your life, reputation, or income depends on your Geeklog site, don't upgrade just yet. However, we do need your help here and would like to encourage you to download Geeklog 1.4.0b1 and try it out. Please help us track down the (old and new) bugs in this new version.
The documentation still leaves something to be desired and will be updated step by step. We will also be publishing a few stories over the next couple of days, each focussing on one of the new features. And since our bugtracker is currently down, please use the official 1.4.0b1 bug thread in the forums instead.
StreamPro is my latest theming effort intended for Geeklog 1.3.11.
This is an easy to style theme having most of it's style restricted to the style sheets including its main layout. The clalendar and the forum styles are found in separate style sheets in order to find and edit those styles quicker. Only 3 or 4 colors were harmed in the making of this theme making it easy to color. Custom template files were created to accommodate the button-like appearance of the standard nav blocks.
StreamPro encorporates a two column layout--a left/nav column and a right/content column. This is perhaps not the best layout for larger displays, but it still looks great on my laptop. There is a significant lack of tables used in this design compared to the standard themes.
Look for StreamPro in the local themes section of Geeklog's download page.
Quite a bit earlier than originally planned, the first Release Candidate for Geeklog 1.3.11 is now available for download.
Geeklog 1.3.11 is effectively a bugfix release over 1.3.10 and is intended to replace it. The change in the version number was necessary since one of the bugfixes involves a change in the database.
It also ensures compatibility with PHP 4.1.x, fixes a bug in the archiving option, several bugs in the calendar, and a host of other fixes
We intend to release the final version of 1.3.11 before the end of the year, so feedback on how this Release Candidate performs would be welcome. Since there weren't any changes in the themes, language files, or config.php, updates should be relatively painless. As usual, the file docs/changed-files provides a list of all the files that actually changed.
A quick recap of some of the new features: New default theme (HTML compliant, at last), SpamX plugin included, story archive option, editable story IDs, autolinks, and more.
We hope you'll like it.
For those updating from 1.3.10rc2, a list of the changed files can be found in docs/changed-files.
The second Release Candidate for Geeklog 1.3.10 is now available for download. It fixes are variety of (mostly minor) bugs in rc1 and also addresses the email problems some users were having (the complete list of changes since rc1 can be found in docs/history).
Please give it a try, but keep in mind that it's still not the final version yet. To upgrade from 1.3.10rc1, please see the enclosed list of changed files in docs/changed-files. There were no database changes, so you only have to replace the files that have changed.
We'll give this Release Candidate a bit more time now so as to find the remaining problems and also give the translators a chance to catch up.
The Geeklog Team is happy to announce the availability of the first Release Candidate for Geeklog 1.3.10. The list of new features should have something for everybody: New default theme, SpamX plugin now included, story archive feature, editable story IDs, improved comment handling, overall speed improvements, and much more ...
As usual, please keep in mind that this is not the final version yet but only a Release Candidate. So if your life (or your income) depends on your Geeklog site, don't install it just yet. On the other hand, we need your feedback to iron out the remaining quirks, so if you can, please give it a try.
If you need help in setting up or using Geeklog, please see the documentation, the FAQ, the Wiki, try our search page or browse through the Support Forum. Chances are someone else already had the same problem.
