I'm not to familar with installing add-ons yet or themes, is there an easy way to upload an add-on and than go into the preferences when logged into admin and click "install" to install the addon. I've used this method before with other programs and just want to make sure that I'm not missing something?

Not yet. Improving the plugin install is part of Matt's project for the Summer of Code.
