The creative use of the word "free" in advertising continues to amaze me

In this case, you get Geeklog "free" once you sign up for a (non-free, of course) hosting plan with this company. That almost sounds like you would have to pay extra for Geeklog in other places ...

Oh well. I assume some people may find it nice not to have to set up Geeklog by themselves.

bye, Dirk

Thanks for clearing that up; saved me a visit to the site! There's no free HOSTING involved. Just a free install, which is as it already is, as Dirk pointed out -- although I'd have been happy to pay him to install it for me! ;-)

Where did you get the idea it wasn't free? The hosting is free not the Geeklog. Well the Geeklog is free too and the install is free and automatic unlimited install.

The hosting is free!

You are right, but on the other hand:

Space: 25 MB
Bandwidth: 250 MB

ain't that much. I would say you need one half for a full featured Geeklog.

3. We are accepting only English language sites at this time unless you have an established site we can translate and preview before you sign up.

Thats why it's free. What do you want? Your own server? Free Cpanel accounts with those features aren't handed out very freely.

English only yes. Unless you hire a team of translators you can't very well monitor and control illegal content easily.

The English rule unless tranlated is for free accounts not pay accounts. You would be surpirised how every criminal on the internet is looking for "free space" to do do "business". They don't want to leave tracks so free hosting is a good tool.

I am conatantly surprised by people who absolutely insist on getting something for nothing. Or if you give them something they want more and more and more. amazing.

Like free advertising for their site by posting commercial messages in a forum?

If I may suggest, (if you are on broadband) host your own. If you are on Windows 2000 Pro or XP a free alternative to IIS is a product called Xitami. And there are free and inexpensive mail servers out there too.

I am currently running on Win2k pro and a DSL connection.

Xitami web server with 12 websites potential is unlimited- FREE

1cis mail server - Shareware (about $60 us per site)

DNSPlus DNS Server - Shareware - Optional

I have installed of course php 4, Perl, and Cold Fusion
Webalizer (site stats) and Serv-U FTP server although Xitami has a built in FTP server I find that I like Serv-U better.

If you are on dial up - Never Mind....

He,

I don't "insist on getting something for nothing." I just say, this is a cheap trick to offer a nearly unusable ammount of something for free and hope that the trapped customer realizes that he really needs some more and pays for it.

This is how advertizing works

BTW: I'm verry satisfied with my reasonably priced host.

It's more than enough for Geeklog, you can install it automatically and you get an advanced Cpanel control panel, hosting on NAC high speed servers.

It's hardly "trapping anyone" either

It is of course designed to increase business by gaining a paid signup after the user learns to like the service. duhh!

I have yet to meet anyone who went into hosting ( or any business) as a charitable venture.

The only point I would agree on is that it could be considered SPAM to post the site. If that is the case, remove the post. If it's not offensive and some people need a good Geeklog host for free I hope it stays up.

Cheers!

Hosting has become very cheap. You should be ashamed if you're still looking for a free host! Only the sun shines for free!

I pay about only about 60 euro/year for 100MB space / 2GB traffic / .nl domain / cPanel / 10 databases, and there are even cheaper hosts!

About the offer for the 'free' hosting: this should be enough for a small personal site, so why complain?
