  FortuneBlock    Popular
Block that displays a quote/fortune using "traditional" fortune data files.

FortuneBlock is based on the Fortune-Cookie programs of Unixland from time
immemorial. Well, perhaps not that long, but the fortune program is well
established.

Fortune works on a flat file system where a directory containing a series of files of quotes separated by a % along with a separate file indexing those quotes is examined, and a random quote is extracted from one of those files.

This is useful for GeekLog users. First, there are a great many quotes files already prepared (http://freshmeat.net/browse/895/?topic_id=895 ). Secondly, if you happen to be hosting your site externally with limited database capacity, this method does not require any db space. As no SQL db is used, adding or removing quotes is as simple as adding or removing files from the quotes directory. Building the index files is a pain, though. In Unixland, use the command strfile (see the man page for how to do this). The Fortune 1.1 script this block is based on also has a createIndexFile() method to build indexes.

Based on Fortune 1.1 by Henrik Aasted Sorensen ( http://www.aasted.org/quote/ )

Deleting Comments Hack and Bug Patch    Popular
Currently only root users can remove comments on a site. This mod gives an admin the capability to grant others the same permission through the addition of two new rights: story.comment and poll.comment. The former will allow a non-root user to delete comments under a story while the latter one will allow him/her to remove comments under a poll. These two new permissions are automatically added to story admin and poll admin, respectively. The site admin can also give others permission by creating his/her own unique group and then assigning one or both of these new rights.

  Switch Language Block    Popular
It allows for an easy change of translation files. It can display a block with a selection of languages (customized by the admin) and the all the user has to do is select his preffered language. If you've seen the Theme Tester, you get the idea.

You can actually see it installed on my site. No content yet, but I am trying to set it up first. This Block is HOT of the press...

NOTE: This will only switch the interface translation only, and it will NOT translate all the content (articles, comments, etc)

Stories by Topic block V2    Popular
A slightly changed version of the original Stories by Topic block. It looks for new stories by looking at the date instead of the story-id so it also works in GL1.3.10 and newer where you can edit the story-id.

Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) Block    Popular
The EFF block is a simple HTML block to allow your vistors to login directly to their EFF action center.

First and foremost, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF)is a donor-supported membership organization working to protect our fundamental rights regardless of technology; to educate the press, policymakers and the general public about civil liberties issues related to technology; and to act as a defender of those liberties. Among our various activities, EFF opposes misguided legislation, initiates and defends court cases preserving individuals' rights, launches global public campaigns, introduces leading edge proposals and papers, hosts frequent educational events, engages the press regularly, and publishes a comprehensive archive of digital civil liberties information at one of the most linked-to websites in the world: http://www.eff.org.

The EFF provides an 'Action Center' to provide you with alerts on technology and civil liberties issues and pending legislation where your action can make a difference. You will also find the tools and information you need to protect your rights in the digital world. Included in these tools are the ability to notify legislators of your views via fax, email, and snail mail directly from the website.

It is particularly important in today's world where legislators are attempting to pass such initiatives as Total Information Awareness to make your voice heard.

  blackwells books    Popular
This block provides a formatted list of books relevant to your site's areas of interest from the Blackwell's bookstore.

This is an academic and UK oriented store but it might be useful if you have a site with a similar focus.

The block 'borrows' the cache concept from the qotd block and adds a few twists which are fully customisable. Such as randomly select a keyword for the topic list, customisable cache life and randomly show part of a list to create a more dynamic list without additional network transfers.
Example at josi.spaceless.com and feedback or suggestions appreciated.

  Multiple Group Calendars    Popular
This is a hack to the calendar system which allows an event admin to choose groups, and have different calendar views to show events related to that group. It's almost like having multiple calendars, but it's not! This only works on the master calendar, not on the personal calendars.
