Me and My Project
Authored by: nsaaman on Monday, April 21 2008 @ 04:56 PM EDT

Hi All, I am Aman Parnami, studying at Indian Institute of Technology(IIT) Bombay, India. In 3 months time I'll be a proud Master's Degree holder
in Computer Sc.

I thank Dirk and Blaine for continuous encouragement and support which led to an accepted proposal.

I have been selected for developing Mailman Plugin for Geeklog. Starting with getting a wrapper to REST Interface of Mailman Project,
I aim to complete the user interface to facilitate Mailing List subscriptions/unsubscriptions, moderation and administration of lists.

Congratulations to all the accepted students. That's it for now. Will keep everyone updated.

Hi, I am Dhairya studying in my second year of undergraduate in computer science.

Thanks Dirk,Justin,Tony and the entire Geeklog Team, won't have been here without your able guidance.

I am going to work on a generalised mapping plugin API for Geeklog 2.x which would facilitate hassle free embedding of Google/Yahoo/Live etc Maps with lots of advanced features and customizations! Also I iwll be working on integration of various APIs (Picasa,Flickr,Google Calendar etc)

All suggestions are welcome !!!
Looking for a great summer ahead !!!

Hello all,
I'm Sami. I live in the UK where I study BSc Computer System Engineering. This is my final year so I'm graduating in July.

This summer I will be working to improve the functionality and speed of the search pages. I will also add a search cloud to the mix. So if anyone from the community has anything in particular they would like to see here feel free to send me a message.

I would also like to thank Dirk and the other mentors for helping me through the application process and will be looking forward to working with them this summer.

Also well done to the other students!

Did you mean send as in reply? If so, I'd like to ask you not to fall for the two biggest problems in search clouds:

1) Allow phrases and not just single words. If you use spaces to separate words, just allow quotes (e.g. "foo bar" standalone-word). If you use commas, then by default you should treat anything between commas as a phrase (this is a phrase, standalone-word).

2) Advise using similar keywords before accepting new ones. You know, like IMDb does. Even if you make your suggestions in a simple level as in IMDb (you probably won't suggest using "dog" if someone adds "canine"), just keep in mind it's better than nothing.

Not applying 1) + 2) would make the search cloud rather meaningless (although so I wouldn't contradict myself, I guess it would still be better than nothing :-).

Thanks and I hope you will all eventually like Geeklog enough to keep developing it even after the summer.

Thanks for the advice LWC. I have already got a few ideas on how to implement the search cloud, such as adding filter lists to stop spam and unwanted parses. I will post up a more detailed explanation on how I plan to implement the improvements in the future and I will take your points into consideration.

Of course the cloud is only a nice by-product of the planned search improvements. So maybe we should let Sami get to work on the actual search first ;-)

Is there a design doc for these planned improvements? Improved how?

Welcome aboard, and please don't miss out that the SOC' wiki article about improving comments has an active talk page too.
