Summer of Code - Update

Summer of Code

Student applications for the Summer of Code have now closed. Thanks to everyone who submitted an application!

We were pleasantly surprised by the number (and quality!) of the applications we received. We will have a really hard time now picking the best ones out of the 50 applications we got.

In the meantime, can any students please keep an eye on their applications in the Google web app - we may have additional questions or comments as we review the applications. Thanks.

For the curious: Applications were submitted for the following project ideas:

  • New install script
  • GUI for config.php
  • Webservices API
  • Improving the comments
  • E-commerce plugin
  • WebDAV API
  • Article plugin for Geeklog 2
  • Application server base for Geeklog 2

We don't know yet how many students Google will assign to Geeklog but it will most likely not be enough to implement all of the above projects. So in addition to picking the best students, we will also have to decide between these projects ...

I've wanted to comment (no pun intended) on:
"A comment should only be editable as long as there hasn't been a follow-up comment."

I think you should save up time and effort and instead ask the task force to simply force a "This comment was updated in X" line. BTW, I think the same should be done to stories and forum posts.

Also, there are still standing patches regarding comments which I see no reason not to apply already. For example, nested comments are hardcoded to the left (which can be so easily solved) and there really should be a line break between the "authored by" line and the comment. Anyway, it's all in the patches.
The Process of Elimination

Do you have an idea what the criteria are going to be in the selection process of narrowing down the projects?

I was just wondering because I encounter this dilemma alot with my small company. There are always more ideas than time and money. Each quarter, I have a full day meeting with my CTO and CFO to rank each technical project based on money, time, impact, potential revenue created, and potential costs cut.

Thanks and good luck.
