Summer is coming!

So the Google Summer of Code will be happening again in 2009: The new FAQ for this year is up now. As you can see, there will be slightly fewer students (and open source projects) accepted into the program this year, i.e. fewer than 2008 but still more than 2007.
Please note that the application period for organizations will only start on March 9 (and March 23 for students). So at this point, this is only a pre-announcement. We will be applying to participate in the Google Summer of Code again, but there is of course no guarantee that we will be accepted again.
Having said that: If you're a student and you're interested in participating in the GSoC 2009, feel free to have a look at our ideas page (note: work in progress). To quote Google's Leslie Hawthorn:
If you are interested in participating, it's a great idea to begin investigating FOSS projects you would enjoy contributing to now.
Time for a quick look back: In our past two years in the Summer of Code, Geeklog and its sister project AptitudeCMS (formerly Geeklog 2) have had 6 students each year, most of which completed their projects successfully. For Geeklog, the following features were implemented:
- New installation script
- New web-based configuration
- Support for the Atom Publishing protocol
- Easier plugin installation and site migration (coming in Geeklog 1.6)
- Revamped search engine (coming in Geeklog 1.6)
- Editable comments and comment moderation (coming in Geeklog 1.6)
These features make a huge difference when installing and using Geeklog. We would like to thank not only our students (Matt, Aaron, Ramnath, Sami, and Jared) but also, of course, Google for letting us take part in the Google Summer of Code and giving us the chance to make Geeklog more powerful and easier to use for our users and visitors. Thanks, guys! Thanks, Google!
