Geeklog 1.3.10rc1

Announcements

The Geeklog Team is happy to announce the availability of the first Release Candidate for Geeklog 1.3.10. The list of new features should have something for everybody: New default theme, SpamX plugin now included, story archive feature, editable story IDs, improved comment handling, overall speed improvements, and much more ...

As usual, please keep in mind that this is not the final version yet but only a Release Candidate. So if your life (or your income) depends on your Geeklog site, don't install it just yet. On the other hand, we need your feedback to iron out the remaining quirks, so if you can, please give it a try.

If you want to see the new theme be sure and delete your cookie, otherwise you won't see much difference here.

I like the new look -- thanks to everyone who had a part.

First of all: Great progress. Geeklog is definetly heading towards all it can possibly be.

2. Is it meant that there is now "0 Comments" AND a "Post a Comment"-Link? I like it better the old way. "0 Comments" does not need / should not be a link IMHO.

3. I would re-write the config php from:

$_CONF['menu_elements'] = array
(
// 'home', // link to homepage
'contribute', // contribute / "submit a story" link
'links', // link to the links section (aka web resources)
'polls', // link to past polls
'calendar', // link to the site calendar
'search', // link to advanced search
'stats' // link to site stats
// 'prefs', // link to user's preferences
// 'plugins' // links added by plugins, like {plg_menu_elements}
// 'custom' // for custom links (see lib-custom.php)
);

to:

$_CONF['menu_elements'] = array
(
// 'home', // link to homepage
'contribute', // contribute / "submit a story" link
'links', // link to the links section (aka web resources)
'polls', // link to past polls
'calendar', // link to the site calendar
'search', // link to advanced search
// 'prefs', // link to user's preferences
// 'plugins' // links added by plugins, like {plg_menu_elements}
// 'custom' // for custom links (see lib-custom.php)
'stats' // link to site stats
);

Like this, people adding the "Plugins", (which 99% do IMHO), dont have to think about the "," behind stats. (I know this is small but I doubt I am the only one tripping over this)

One more thing:
The Block selection does not work anymore. As well as at Geeklog.net as well as on my test-installation, users see all blocks, ignoring the setting done in the preferences. Anybody else observed the same?

Yeah, that was actually one of the first things I noticed after the install here on geeklog.net. Haven't had a chance to look into it yet ...

bye, Dirk

Well that is a good move for Geeklog, a much more professional looking template. But not so good for my site, since that is what I'm using and now it's going to look like everyone elses. :P

I loved the professional theme the first time I saw it and now that it is GL's default theme, I love it even more.

btw, After you guys upgraded geeklog.net to 1.3.10rc1, my personal preference settings make little difference.

so that's the good and that's the bad. The best is that you guys and/or girls have all done some awesome work here--very impressive!

Recommend adding a security check to the top of the following files to prevent direct access by outsiders. Although it is recommended these files be placed outside the web tree, this is not an option for all users.

reveals directory path info:
/plugins/spamx/magpierss/rss_fetch.php
/plugins/spamx/config.php

reveals directory path info and allows upload of external files from a remote server:
/plugins/spamx/BlackList.Examine.class.php
/plugins/spamx/DeleteComment.Action.class.php
/plugins/spamx/EditBlackList.Admin.class.php
/plugins/spamx/functions.php
/plugins/spamx/Import.Admin.class.php
/plugins/spamx/LogView.Admin.class.php
/plugins/spamx/MailAdmin.Action.class.php
/plugins/spamx/MassDelete.Admin.class.php
/plugins/spamx/MTBlackList.Examine.class.php

Looking awesome.

Minor Glitch, the comments sections in the File Management plugin are broken. I know thats not core geeklog per say.

Wow! A "Thank you Team!" is in place.

Geeklog really keeps me on my toes. Just when I think I have got the system pegged to where I want it, you guys move the goalposts. A grateful thank you for keeping all of us alive and learning. Love the new theme.

Just a couple of 'funnies' that I noticed:

1. The topbar shows repeats of "support, themes, forum"
2. Search not working
3. When doing a search in forum, Replies and Views shows lots of '0's

Great job all the same...

Regarding :
1. The topbar shows repeats of "support, themes, forum"

I noticed that it only happens with the older themes but not on the new "Professional" theme. Is it me alone or do the rest of you encounter this same problem.
Geeklog 1.3.10rc1
Authored by: Dirk on Friday, October 22 2004 @ 03:06 PM EDT
That's not a bug but more of a configuration problem on geeklog.net.

The Professional theme, which is our new default theme, doesn't use the {plg_menu_elements} variable, so plugin entries wouldn't be visible. Instead, they have been added to the normal menu bar, {menu_elemens}, via that new config.php option. As a result, all the other themes that use both {menu_elements} and {plg_menu_elemens} display the plugin entries twice now ...

As for the search problems in your above post: Can you be more specific, please? Search seems to be working just fine.

bye, Dirk

Thank Dirk for clarifying on the topbar issue.

Regarding the search problem, it could be due to my Zonealarm Firewall. I tried doing search without the firewall and the problem disappeared.

Sorry!

I'm curious - at any point do you plan on making the forum plugin a default plugin provided with the install?

Actually I am not sure if this would be such a good idea. with the phpBB-bridge developing now it seems a lot of people prefer to have the choice.

Also the forum seems to be quite a table & file load. Most of the smaller sites dont need it IMHO. Further it has a lot of code & therefore will be/is updated in completely other schedules than the core system.

If I compare it with the static page plg, which is much smaller and of much wider use...

What advantages would InnoDB tables give me over MyISAM? And would they make "database backups somewhat more complicated" even with PhpMyAdmin?
Geeklog 1.3.10rc1
Authored by: Dirk on Thursday, October 21 2004 @ 04:19 PM EDT
Well, if you have to ask, then you shouldn't be using InnoDB tables ...

The guys with the really big Geeklog sites have had some issues with table locking under heavy traffic and recommended using InnoDB tables in that case. We're talking about sites with 6-digit numbers of users here or sites that are slashdotted on a regular basis.

The downside of InnoDB tables is that it's difficult to create a consistent backup. You'll either have to lock the database for the time of the backup or buy innodb.com's solution ...

In other words: If in doubt, don't.

I noticed something strange in the General Help forum but I am not sure if it is related to RC1. I don't remember seeing this problem before.

I did a search in the forum for sillig to find a message I left back on Oct 11. The search found my post and I clicked on the link to view the message. If I hover over any of the hyperlinks it shows
http://www.<font%20class=highlight>sillig</font>.com/Test/resize-full.html and if I click the link I see a page cannot be displayed message.

If I manually browsed the messages back to Oct 11 and view my message "Image resize using img tag" the hyperlinks work just fine.

Again, excellent work!

One thing. {topic_image} isn't handled for Home in public_html/lib-common.php lines 1953-1973. Since there isn't a {topic_image} for Home, I just added

$sections->set_var( 'topic_image', '' );
to line 1957.

The more ideal solution would be to have a {topic_image} for Home, but that's a much bigger fix.

Nice work! Love the new theme.

The only thing I noticed not working was emails going out to new users (the one that contains their passwords).

Using the "Mail Users" feature works fine, as does the messenger plugin email functions.

Currently have mine set to "mail" but have tried "sendmail" as well. New user emails that should contain the user's passwords do not go out.

Anyone else having this problem?

I also couldn't get the stats plugin to install. Kept getting this error:

Sat Oct 23 12:16:25 2004 - 1146: Table 'myifgorg_geeklog.gl_userstats' doesn't exist. SQL in question: SELECT COUNT(*) FROM gl_userstats WHERE date = '20041023'

It has installed fine on all of my other sites. Maybe the plugin has to be updated for 1.3.10?

I had a problem like this.

It was because the site name from the config was the same as the domain/email name ... when using the form to send mail, try using exactly the same details from your config.

My site name was configured as "DeadEd.com" ... which was, suprisingly :P, run on www.deaded.com with email address from deaded@deaded.com. Everything was apparently set correctly but when I changed the site name to just "DeadEd" the user password emailing started to work again.

I had the same problem since 1.3.8.
It seems that the mail function tries to verify if the user exist on the localhost if the domain equals to the admin email and usually fails.

a few important features which many other cms have already adopted and will be very welcome :

guest submission of news in their own name provided that name has not been taken up already

image posting along with news

member to member direct private messaging

a favorites folder and "add to my fav" icon beside print|email icon

Image posting is built in (only for (Story) Admins, but still ...).

For messaging, there's Blaine's Messenger plugin (which is also installed here on geeklog.net).
