Geeklog 2: User Interface

Geeklog 2We are making slow but steady progress on Geeklog 2. We are to a point where we need to start laying the framework for the user interface.

This has clearly introduced a need for help from real HTML/xHTML/CSS experts. Vinny and myself can do this sort of stuff but it seems that a true expert in the field would allow us to concentrate on the kernel and overall framework while leaving the important task of defining the vision for the UI to someone who really excels at it.

What are we looking for? Simply put we want someone that has demonstrated experience building UI's with little-to-no table-driven layouts by using as much CSS-driven layout as possible. We also want someone who has used GL 1.3.x so they know where we've been and appreciate the current limitations and drawbacks with that system.

If you are such a person, please post a note here and we'll be sure to follow-up (be sure to register with the site when you post so we have your email on file).

Thanks,

--Tony

I would be glad to assist you. I am by no means an artist but I have
some experience with the technical side of web design.

At my site you can find a geeklog 1.3.11 theme which uses only CSS for
layout and positioning.

Maybe a quick email to either of these guys would turn up some folks with hard-core CSS experience that would like to help out.

I really wish I could say that I am your guy.

But I am not.

I will however continue to answer questions when I can and I will also do everything I can to get the geeklog name out.

I think GL is the best and will do all I can and am asked too to keep it going as well as it is today.

Thank you

i would like to remind you guys of the issues regarding browser compatiability when doing pure css layouts, as well as its efect on image positioning in story posts, when doing 3 column layouts. I recomend sticking to tables over div for somethings for sanity reasons.

I beg to differ. :-)

As long as you know your IE-hacks, you can do very well with tableless designs. Just remember what is "!IMPORTANT". ;-)

Not sure what you want. I'm new to GL (5 months) but, I find the GL 1.3x to be so far beyond what is concisely offered by other CMS footprints that I looked, served, tried and pretty much disbanded all others but for flat-file. I find the blocking and static page effects to allow for so much flexibility that I'm not sure about the full CMS idea myself. Tables might be retro, but, they work and work through a whole set of backtracking browsers. Nonetheless, if I could be of help, would be happy to lend a hand. This CMS is very clearly written and laid out. It's a gem - www.wbrandes.com/geek/ - William

I have an idea! why not have a wee competition? All involved can create and submit a style sheet (w/images) based on a set xhtml doc.

Have the GL team choose 2 or 3 of the those based on whatever criteria they please. Those 2 or 3 authors will then form the GL2 design team with a colaborative effort on the first GL2 UI, or work separately on individual GL2 themes, one or more of which would make it into the GL2 official theme pack.

or maybe I've just had to much coffee this morning. :P

I'd love to help out. Stupid resume line: professional web and graphic
designer with seven years experience within private consulting. Now doing
design and image marketing for large public university.

I'd help out with the PHP if I had enough time. I've been using Geeklog for a
while, though I haven't really done more than gloss over the GL2 framework
docs.

Tony is in the process of moving and I know he's running pretty hard right now. I'm sure he will be pleased with the response to his post and follow-up as soon as he's found his computer and finished arranging the furniture.

I'd like to challenge this Graphics and HTML/CSS talent to come up with an original GL 1.3.X theme. The community can use another original theme suitable for a business or professional community site.

I can help you as much as I can. I have done CSS/XHTML layouts before, and would love to see what I can do for you.

I have been looking for an XHTML/CSS complaint CMS for quite some time, and so far have found only one. The other compliant are blogs or forums.

This would be an excellent CMS to make it so. I cannot promise you the moon, but I can offer the best of my ability. I also have friends that can help me out as well. Drop me a line if you are interested.

Are you still looking for help with the UI template coding? My only experience online geeklog online can be seen at pusd.us. 3 years ago, but I recall needing to do a lot of tweaking, especially with the template I coded, and the language.
