Announce : Project Mango

AnnouncementsToday, I have finally got the Project Mango website up and running.

So, what is Project Mango? Simply put I am taking the great software that is Geeklog and taking it to another level. I am in the stages of early development of Groupware software, that uses Geeklog as the base, but will be extended to include many more features such as Outlook-style event system, and more of a group focus.

Anyway, I've not got much up today (and possibly all this week as I am moving on Friday), but thanks for looking if you do!

Tane, maybe you can expand on this a bit further. Are you talking about developing a plugin or series of plugins for GL.

We have extended the API significantly in the past couple years and it continues to be extended based on plugin developers feedback and contributions. We need more plugins and this level of contribution to continue the to build on an already great platform. I hope your considering this path as it was not clear.

I can only assume the Geeklog Community would celebrate more plugin development and contribution.

Hi Blane.

The easiest way to explain it would be too call it "Geeklog Groupware". Basicly, I've used geeklog for the past 4 years, and I am quite familiar with the inner workings. Recently, I've been looking a groupware software and have't found anything I really like, so I thought the easiest way would to be to take Geeklog and take it from portal software to groupware.

The way I want to do it, is to remove some of the code, make some of the plugins part of the code product, and change some functions. Also, I am changing the topic and user hierachy.

Topics will be replaced with communities. A community can have it's own skin, layout and features. For example, one community might not need to feature a file system and only has news. Users then subscribe to these

I want the portal features to be replaced with a central page for each user when they log in. This portal will show the users internal messages (like email), news postings, files, etc from communities they are subscribed to.

I'll keep some things like the story posting system, but I want it to be posted into the forum part (which I will fully integrate as a core feature, not a plugin). Each community will have its forum group, and can have more seperate forum topics under this.

An example of the above would be a customer service company who are developing an intranet. They can set up many "communities" such as Telephone Staff, HR, IS, and Managment. Users can be assigned communites that are relevent to them, and they will recieve news, events and files associated with this.

I'm going to convert my messy hand written notes onto the site Wiki soon. If you have any ideas or comments, please feel free to use the Wiki or forums, or email myself.

Is there a demo running anywhere?

Unfortuantly not, and there possibly won't be for a few months. I've still got a few more things to do before I make a CVS release as well.

I'll be updating the documentation more though, and I'll be looking for people to join in development so an open-API can be developed more easily.

Sounds like a fork to me.

Yeah, I'm fuzzy here too. However, I did post a message to Tane's site asking more about what he is really trying to contribute because, IMHO, he would be better served with helping the GL2 effort. Also, in other news, we should be posting a simpified version of the GL2 plugin API this week for public scrutiny. Stay tuned...

The reason people blame things on previous generations is that there's only one other choice.

Well, it looks like the Mango died on the vine. It's now a music production related project. Not sure if it will be a GL plugin or not.
