Axonz 3.0 CSS Theme Released!

Announcements

Axonz 3.0 CSS is now available for immediate download! Tried, tested and true with Geeklog 1.3.8-1sr3, this is nearly a complete rewrite of the original theme.

Version 3.0 boasts a nearly all CSS rendered layout... almost tableless (comments are in tables) woo hoo!

In addition to the new architecture, I created 4 'flavors', of the theme; red, blue, green and grey.

I'll upload the them here later today, but for now, you can get them, or try them out, on my site:

The inital glance looks awsome! Congrats. And boy does that css look cleeeaaaan. Nice commenting too.

Now for the cautions and bugs. All clients tested were on W2K

MSIE 5.5
Right blocks aren't visible in 800x600 (see here).
Also notice that you can't scroll right

Mozilla FireBird 0.7
Have to scroll right in 800x600 (see here)
Also notice the white margin in the upper right if you scroll right

Netscape 4.79 (I'm not kidding. My clients' sites still get about 4% of their business from netscape 4.x users) Also many linux users are still using 4.x if that's an audience you're trying to attract

  • Version 3.0 axonz didn't do so well (see here)
  • But Version 2.1 axonz did fairly well even in 800x600 (see here only 1024x768 shown)
Notice the broken story images though.

The MSIE and Mozilla issues seem to be width related. Remember that the scroll bar takes up some of the 800. I usually choose a width of 760 if I want to ensure no right scrolling.

Overall, this is great! Thanks for your hard work and contribution. -Matthew

WOW!... darnit...
...the only problem with CSS positioning... it's 'new'.

Thanks very much for the screenshots... i think i have my work cut
out for me for the next release...

I wonder if i should just scrap the CSSp and go back to tables?

Cheers,

scrap? heck no. Your 3.0 makes the perfect foundation for anyone who wants to create a w3 validating page. I myself have spent hours trying to "clean up" the supposed "clean" theme. Sounds like you can relate to that. Just think how easy it will be for future geekers to go in and modify your template. If they want to start from scratch, they can just unlink the css and start adding....no deletions or cleaning necessary. Anyways, I'm rambling. Don't scrap anything.

As far as those old browsers and small monitors go, I've been looking at the geek code with this problem in mind. lib-common.php has a section that evaluates which theme to use. It seems like it would not be too difficult to add a few more conditions that evaluate the environment variable "$HTTP_USER_AGENT" against a table of valid themes per agent and a priority sort in case the default won't work and there is more than one valid alternative.

Just think, this would also enable the ability to cater to WAP, lynx, WAI, or even robots for that matter.

I'm still getting to know geeklog and the API, but I hope to tackle this once I get more oriented unless the devteam is working on something already.

Thanks again for you hard work! -Matthew

Interesting... it would mean a bit more work on us themers but
imagine a theme that included the HTTP/WAP/TEXT versions of the
same theme...

very interesting...

I had the same problem that you do with your site 800x600 and lower have issues of right column falling below. I had to resort to using a table for the main layout. 3 rows 3 columns with header and footer having a colspan=3. This seems to work good for me and doesn't break in older browsers. You can see mine at http://www.catt.com, I've also done a lot more with graphics.

your'll probably find more tables then the one I mentioned but mostly css :)

w00ge, no doubt Axonz 3.0 is so sweet and probably one of the most desirable themes Geeklog has seen yet. Bravo on your work and release and I hope to see more Axonz in the future.

Thank's for the candy ;)

Just a quick note to all... I'm not going to release my theme on this
site just yet...

I'd like to squash a few bugs that have popped up recently, before I
upload it to the geeklog downloads section.

You will still be able to download v3.0 from my site, until I finnish
bug squashin'

Cheers all!
