New Gallery/Geeklog Integration

Announcements

A new integration has been released for Gallery 1.4-pl1 and Geeklog 1.3.8.

The major change in this release of the integration is a new installation method. The integration file contains a complete gallery install modified for Geeklog. Just follow the install or upgrade directions for gallery (including completing two new configuration options), and the install is complete. No hacking of php files required.

Download (direct link) the file from GPlugs now.

*Note the filename was accidently named gallery_1.3.4-pl1_1.3.8.tar.gz, this does actually contain the gallery 1.4-pl1 release though.

It worked fine for me. In fact I installed GL, Gallery, and GalleryRemote all in the last few days and am really, really pleased with them. Thanks very much to all concerned!

I've got this installed and working. Very nice! Now, I have some questions... I'm new to both geeklog and gallery, and if I neet to rtfm, just let me know. I'm mostly looking for "that's doable", "that will be doable", or "do it yourself" responses.

Is the URL rewriting function of gallery broken in the integrated version? It seems the tarball doesn't include gallery/setup/.htaccess file that the standard release of gallery does... I noticed this after getting the warning that Apache doesn't obey my .htaccess file (yeah, it does) and trying to figure out why. It appears that this is used somehow by the check_htaccess function. As it's an optional feature anyway, I didn't dig too deep....

Can I control access to the gallery in the same way I do other geeklog resources? I'd like to prevent non-members from viewing it and I'd like to control album creation/editing via a group. It would be nice if users could have their own album and make it viewable and editable to other members only at their discretion. It seems that, as it is now, I need "root" privs to edit the gallery. Is that right?

Can I use the gallery for user photos?

Can I embed thumbs from the gallery in stories? Comments? Etc? What about the fullsize pictures?

I'd like a block that displays a random photo and its caption from a particular album. Does such a block exist yet? (Should I be searching somewhere before asking?)

Thanks much for any help you can give me and thank you for making this integration so easy. :-)

Here's a followup on my own post after discovering some answers...

> Is the URL rewriting function of gallery broken in the
> integrated version?

Yes. You need the gallery/setup/.htaccess file from the gallery distribution. With that file present, configuration of url rewriting works fine.

> Can I control access to the gallery in the same way I do
> other geeklog resources?

Yes, but you need to do it through the gallery's permissions page rather than through the geeklog admin section.

> Can I use the gallery for user photos?

I haven't figured this one out yet.

> Can I embed thumbs from the gallery in stories?
> Comments? Etc? What about the fullsize pictures?

I haven't figured this out out yet either.

Yes, such a block exists. I found GalleryRandomPhotoBlock on squatty.com. It requires a few manual fixes to get it working right with an embedded gallery.

I untared this and there is not setup directory. Please advise.

The reason people blame things on previous generations is that there's only one other choice.

Hmmm. I just downloaded the file and checked, the setup directory is definitely there. I'd recommend trying to download the file again (gallery_1.3.4-pl1_1.3.8.tar.gz from http://sf.net/projects/gplugs).

The setup directory is there, however, it is missing a .htaccess file from the gallery package. Without that .htaccess file, the configuration script isn't able to properly setup url rewriting.

Oops. I did indeed leave that out. It has been added to source gz downloadable from sourceforge. Good catch, thanks.

One thing I've noticed is that after going from integrated Gallery 1.3.3 to 1.4-pl1, page creation times (anything involving gallery, including the random photo block) have gone from ~1sec to ~10 sec. Has anyone else noticed that? Ideas?

Well, nevermind.. it seems to have gone away on its own.

If you run on unix/linux you don't have to worry about this security problem (as long as you don't leave you're gallery in the 'install' mode).

Anyone who is concerned, there is a new download available from gplugs with -pl2. Windows users are strongly recommended to upgrade (or follow the directions on the gallery web page, a very simple fix).

Iīve just installed gallery 1.4|pl2 and tried the integration with a brand new geeklog 1.3.8-1sr2, followed all the steps in the doc but when I try http://my.site.com/gallery/ gives me an error from the geeklog_userdb class in the gallery/classes/geeklog/User.php file (line26). I thought the error was caused because the integration guide (and the files inside) were ready for gallery 1.4|pl1, instead of pl2, but I canīt find any 1.4 pl1 to test it...

Any advice?

It sounds like you are using the old, manual install of the integration which requires some coaxing to work with recent versions of gallery (1.4 and above).

Try downloading the most recent integration version from http://sf.net/projects/gplugs.

I just installed gallery_1`.4.1-pl1_1.3.8.tar.gz, went through the installation and configuration instructions and receivethe following error when inoking Gallery:

Cannot instantiate non-existent class: geeklog_userdb in /home/httpd/gallery/init.php on line 275

Removing the Gallery-Geeklog install and installing just Gallary works fine.

What are the referenced tweaks required?

Hi Vinny or any geeksters.

Here is a silly question for you all.. How do I add the link of the Gallery either to the Block or Static pages? I'm still pretty new with this GL stuff and any suggestion would be really appreciated.

Thanks....
