Geeklog 2 Update

Geeklog 2I don't have a lot of earth shattering news from the GL2 arena but some important strides have been taken here in the past few weeks and we near some of the more critical parts of the GL2 development effort. If you have been following, we already developed a custom PHP4 session handler that will store session data in any database supported by PEAR::DB and we have some beta code for our authentication and authorization engine. This past week the model-view-controller package that we plan to use in the GL2 kernel and strongly encourage module developers to use was completed and work is nearly complete on the new translation engine.

While the progress on GL2 has been slow, we are excited about the progress so far and in the very near future we will be tackling the two hardest issues facing GL2, the module API and the HTML rending methodology. As always, feel free to post questions here or to the geeklog-devtalk mailing list.

in a nutshell, what noticeable new features will accompany the new release that the regular user would appreciate?

Don't you just hate it that PHP5 is basically right around the corner, hopefully GL2 will be updated when it comes out. :)

Since all of GL2 is object oriented, we shouldn't have too much trouble moving to PHP5. Unless GL2 is grossly delayed, I can't see us porting to PHP5 until a good portion of the mainstream starts porting over. At that point we'll probably have to fork the code in CVS and maintain to branches :-(

What new features will GL2 have? I don't have the time now to enumerate them all. Just note that GL2 will support every feature in GL1.3.x. The biggest difference will be the homepage will be able to accomodate more than just stories. and that you will be able to attach items to other items (i.e. attach a document to an article or a poll to a document, etc). Support for PHP4 sessions and multiple webservers as well as support for DBMS's other than MySQL (what ever PEAR::DB supports). Finally, we will allow you to remotely browse any available GL2 modules remotely and install them right from within your own GL2 installation.

The reason people blame things on previous generations is that there's only one other choice.
