Geeklog 2 License.. GPL or Not GPL

Geeklog 2I happened over to the Geeklog 2 link, and noticed that the bottom of the page says "Please note that the code is copyrighted and not for 3rd party use at this time."

I really do hope you decide to go GPL with geeklog 2. It was one of the determining factors for choosing Geeklog for my site. Your product is good, hell its damn near great, but there are quite a few closed source, or specially licensed Content Management Systems out there. Mambo, Ez Publisher, Php-Nuke, just to name a few. Allthough all of those products are solid products , the Open License was a pivetal factor in choosing Geeklog.

GL2 will most likely not be released under the GPL but under some other open / free software license. The LGPL and BSD-style licenses as well as some others (Mozilla, PEAR/PHP) have been discussed but no final decision has been made yet.

bye, Dirk

Php nuke operates under the GNU/GPL license since the last update. Maybe you are referring to developers supplied mods but admin/webmasters have the freedom of using the GNU/GPL license. It's free, looks great, and easy to administrate. That's why I used Nuke. The code is not as stable as I've found geeklog however there seems to be more and more issues piling up since install and things are going the same route. If geeklog gives me as much trouble as nuke I might try out post-nuke. Why not I've tried everything else so far.

Here's a site where people can read the different open source licenses.

I just checked the three software you mentioned here. They're all released under GPL. I'm not familar with the first two, but I know phpNuke's developer wants total control and is on a power trip. This was one of the main reasons I chose not to use that software. Perhaps you're confusing the developers' behavior with the actual license behind the software.

The GPL license is not the least restrictive license anyway. Other licenses give you more freedom, expecially to use the code in conjunction with commercial products.

GPL Requires you to give away your own work if you base it on a work under GPL.

LGPL is better than GPL, because it doesn't require you to GPL your own code.

A CMS especially should not be GPL licensed, because it prevents anyone from building a commercial module that works with it.

Moving away from GPL, IMHO, is a Good Thing(tm).
