External HTML Grabber Script

AnnouncementsHere is an external HTML grabber script as modified from the 4CM_Grabber script found at http://4cm.com. This script has been modified to display external webpage content within a GeekLog site. 4cm's download site states that this code is proprietary, but gives no details about usage restriction. It is free, in any case, and since I do not profit from it I'm releasing this code anyway in the hopes that the GeekLog plugin developers here can use it as a basis for a better "external includes" plugin.

In any case, expect NO help from 4cm in regards to this particular script. You're not going to get much help from me, either, since suprise of surprises, I am not a PHP programmer.

See the script in action at Thane Community.

It works the other way around. If the creators have not specifically said their software can be used for free with no restrictions, then you have to get their permission before using it. All software is automatically copyrighted. You can't just take use it because they didn't post any restrictions on their site. They could easily have your site shut down.

Best to avoid possible legal hassles and ask upfront. If they don't mind, then no problem. If they do mind, there are other scripts that do the same thing. Keep in mind though you open the door to copyright infringement lawsuits if you grap entire webpages from another's website to display on yours without their permission.

I am aware of and have made a note of these copyright issues inside the script. I have told people where the script come from, and it has been mentioned that such a simple piece of code as the original is shouldn't be considered proprietary.

I have referenced 4cm numerous times and stated within the code that it is a modification of theirs, and provided the link to their homepage, etc., so they should be thanking me (and GeekLog) for the publicity they're getting now. Besides, they are offering up this code for download for free without any prior agreements or licensing information within their site or the code itself. The only caveat they made was if their "powered by" is removed from the code; not to expect any support from them. I have repeated this disclaimer in my posts and in the code.

I have also tried to find contact info for 4cm, but everything points to their forum, which is all about God and whatnot, and apparently has nothing in it regarding the script. I have no patience reading through religious drivel to find this info, though. If you're more patient than I am or religion is your bag, be my guest: 4cm

I have clearly stated my reasons for modifying this script and making these modifications available to the GeekLog community. I have been pretty thorough about this so I don't think I deserve your condescending attitude.

Very cool script. I agree, having seen the disclaimer on 4cm, I see no problem with you making a few changes to the code and allowing others to use it. 4cm just states that once you make changes, they will not support it. Seems fair enough.

Has anyone downloaded this script that may still have an intact copy? The download link doesn't work anymore and I sure could use it.
