Articles and Discussion

GeeklogI am wondering if anyone can tell me what the advantages are to having both a discussion area and a blog with comment capability area.

Aren't they basically the same thing?

I was impressed with how squatty integrated phpBB into blocks on his main geeklog site.

Can anyone think of reasons why a site operator couldn't use a product like phpBB instead of the blogging that is included with geeklog?

Certain phpBB articles could till be posted on the GL main page, like squatty did.

The main reason I can think of for combining them is that you have all your articles (postings) and comments (discussions) in the same place, which would make maintainence easier, and searching easier.

Anyone with ideas on either side of this?

I guess it depends on the content of your site. For example, I'm running a forum alongside the MacOS X FAQ. I'm using Geeklog as a true CMS on the FAQ, i.e. I reserve stories for informative articles and actual answers to common problems. The forum is then used for the typical "I can't get this and that running" type of questions.

Rob Griffiths does something similar on Macosxhints.com.

Yeah, I can see your point Bob. Ideally, the forums on my site are used for support or how-to type questions. Stories are specific to a given news topic or general announcements.

One idea (which I've seen on http://www.cws.ws) is to create links to dynamically start a forum thread for a given article. This is a great example of how the to merge the two apps.

I understand the need for a front page presentation of some, but not all, articles. That could be accomplished by having one or more forums that are moderated, or are open only to certain members of a group that are allowed to post.

The "articles" that fit the criteria set up by the admin would be shown on the forum, and on the blog.

I don't know if geeklog handles newsletters, but phpWebsite has a plugin for newletters that use a third set of tables to assemble and mail out email newsletters to subscribers.

It seems to me that these are all the same thing. Shouldn't it be one set of data, but three different ( newsletter, blog and discussion ) ways of distributing it?

I'd also throw in online books as being implementable the same way. Create a forum with chapters as postings, then sort by chapter order and present as a book.

I agree with Dirk here. On iowaoutdoors.org the articles are for 'news-worthy notes' and require moderation to ensure quality. The forums is a place where members can interact at will.

The reason people blame things on previous generations is that there's only one other choice.
